Free Agent Profile & Prediction #28: Marwin Gonzalez

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – JULY 19: Marwin Gonzalez #9 of the Minnesota Twins makes a catch in right field of a ball hit by Marcus Semien #10 of the Oakland Athletics during the sixth inning of the game on July 19, 2019 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 32 year old long time utility player for the Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins enters free agency for the second time in his career. A career slash of .261/.317/.413 with a .729 OPS means Gonzalez is about a league average player who can play multiple positions on the diamond and has five seasons of postseason experience. While Gonzalez doesn’t make extremely hard contact, as evident by his .413 career SLG and his career 89.3 Exit Velocity average for his career, he strikeouts out below league average for his career at 21.3 percent. In 2020, Gonzalez dealt with a down season, and it was largely in part to his inability to hit pitchers fastballs like he did in previous seasons. In 2019, Gonzalez feasted on fastballs, hitting to the tune of a .453 SLG, but in 2020, he just didnt get the same results, hitting to a .270 SLG against them.

With the glove, Gonzalez is nothing short of outstanding, totaling 4 Outs Above Average in 2020, between four different positions. Gonzalez defensive versatility is a huge factor into why he will likely be picked up for a decent chunk of money, even though he is coming off of down season. On top of that, Gonzalez has been an above average player at all six positions Gonzalez has played in his career, and has been worth 15 DRS at his most valuable position in left field.

Like I previously mentioned, Gonzalez is such a valuable player, because he gives you everything you could want outside of power. He will hit at around league average, hes not extremely slow, he plays outstanding defense, he is a switch hitter, and he is still only 32 years old. With the lack of stars in this free agent market outside of Bauer and Realmuto, expect Gonzalez to be a sneaky multi year pick up by a team.

These are the teams I think are in contention to sign Gonzalez: Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Washington Nationals, Oakland A’s, Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, New York Mets

Final Landing Spot Prediction: Marwin Gonzalez signs a 2 yr/12.5 million dollar contract with the San Francisco Giants

2021 Stat Line Prediction: .272/.325/.409 .734 OPS 8 HR 41 RBI
